Introduction
Gujarat, with a population of 6, 03, 83, 638 (census-2011) has a limited number of Mental Health facilities and professionals. Against this backdrop, there have been a number of positive developments.

Government of Gujarat as part of Objectives of Quality health care to improve health infrastructure of state and meet the healthcare needs & expectations of common man of Gujarat at all levels of healthcare delivery system, as per National Healthcare Quality Standards. Two mental hospitals in state i.e. Hospital for Mental Health, Ahmedabad and Vadodara were assessed by Quality counsel of India for National Accreditation Board of Hospital and Health Care Providers-NABH Accreditation and Hospital for Mental Health Ahmedabad will became 1st NABH Accredited Mental Hospital in the country.

Gujarat is probably the first state to have carried out step-wise activities for the development of the mental health sector. Government of Gujarat in association with mental health experts from NIMHANS had drawn the Terms of Reference for the mental health sector development. This was followed by the floating of Mental Health Mission, comprising of different professionals from the relevant fields. The Mission brought out the report "Priorities for Mental Health Sector Development in Gujarat " in the year 2003 in a stipulated time.

This report candidly reviews the Mental Health Status in the State. It lays down the priorities & suggests ways & means to strengthen the mental health sector. Mental Health Sector is extremely complex with challenging needs. This report is the corner stone in formulating the mental healthcare policy. Mental Healthcare Policy draft has gone through various workshops & consultative processes with the stakeholders and is being formulated for the final draft
To look at the complexities of the Mental Health sector and to plan and implement the Mental Health Programme, a U/S 25, not-for-profit company, "Gujarat Foundation For Mental Health and Allied Sciences" has been registered under the Companies Act. Process to appoint the board members/CEO to the company has been initiated. As midterm measures, different pilot programmes are underway in the different areas of Mental Health i.e. service delivery, epidemiology, school children, street children, rehabilitation, women's issues etc.

Pilot project on "Capacity Building and Capacity Strengthening" for NGOs and Hospitals for mental health has been completed. As an out come of this exercise, Government of Gujarat has got a manual printed for the training of the counselors in the mental health field. ICMR in collaboration with IHBAS New Delhi was at the forefront during the work carried out at the earthquake affected areas of Gujarat. Report on "Mental Health Aspects of the Earthquake in Gujarat" has been published. The research activity was in collaboration with Government of Gujarat. Along with the research activity, component of service delivery was also added. Looking to the magnitude of the psychosocial problem ICMR in collaboration with IHBAS sanctioned an ICMR Task Force Project. The Taskforce has taken up the project "Mental Health Service Delivery & Service Delivery model in disaster affected (earthquake) population in Gujarat". Three Districts have been identified for the project i.e. Kutch-Bhuj, Rajkot, Ahmedabad.

Government of Gujarat in collaboration with WHO (state unit) has carried out epidemiological surveys in Junagadh, Navsari and Ahmedabad districts.

Mental Health Services available in the State

6 Government Medical College: 300 beds (B.J. medical college Ahmedabad: beds 50+S.S.G. medical college Vadodara beds 50+Govt. Medical College , Surat :beds 50+M.P. Shah medical college Jamnagar: beds 50+P.D.U. Medical college Rajkot : beds 50+medical college Bhavnagar : bed 50)

4 Self finance medical college: 80 beds (NHL municipal medical college: beds 50+P.S.Medical college KARAM SAD: beds 30+C.U.Shah medical college Surendra Nagar beds: 30and SURAT: beds20)

54 licensed Psychiatry Nursing home: 280 beds

Rehabilitation services for mentally disabled

Disability CAMPS
 Aims - mental health awareness - acceptance with community participation, and reduction of stigma.
 Activity- focused on early detection, diagnosis and intervention of mental illness and other behavioral problems.
 Certification- disability certificate are issued with the help of district Civil Surgeon and district social defense officer, for getting benefits as per the Disability Act.
 Total 56 camps arranged in the last year
 
Steps taken for reducing long stay patients in mental hospital
 
Made available all essential drugs with newer medicines
Increased the supply of drugs from two weeks to two months in OPD
Emphasized more on short stay (section 15 & 19)
Started open ward facility, where patients are admitted with their family
Started Group of Family Care givers'
More emphasis on Information Education and Communication activity and family care givers involvement in mental health care
Outreach services started
Hospital staff trained in the rehabilitation services
Enhanced the vocational and occupational training and involved Relatives along with the patients
NGO linkages strengthened for rehabilitation of chronic mentally ills
As a results only 26 patients are long stayed in state run mental hospital out of 480 in year 2000

Rehabilitation of wandering Mentally III
 
From Jan 2005 Hospital made efforts to convince the Police Commissioner for taking active involvement of Police Dept. for issue of wandering mentally ill in the city.

Police Commissioner has given written direction to the Police Inspectors to take under protection the wondering mentally ill and make an arrangement for hospitalization before producing to honorable Metropolitan Magistrate as per section 23 of MHA 1987.Total 458 patients admitted as wandering mentally illTotal 354 patients reintegrated with their families, out of them 65 patients belonged to other states were rehabilitated by hospital staff

Total 81 patients having MR/age related problems restituted in suitable institutes of NGOs

AADHAR Helpline dials 100 or 9722100101 working for rehabilitation of mentally ill as per the provision of section 23 of mental health Act 1987 in Ahmedabad city from 9: 00 am to 5:00 pm as a pilot project and after the results of this project similar help line will be started in the state.
