Introduction
Definition of Health
As per Ayurveda, Health is a state of equilibrium of physical humours (દોષ, ધાતુ, મલ, અગ્નિ), psychological (મન), sensorial (ઇન્દ્રિય) and spiritual (આત્મા) energy.

Echoing with the definition of Health by WHO i.e.Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. (International Health Conference, New York).
The aim of any medical system is to cure the ailment and provide healthy society to serve nation. Ayurveda with its holistic approach keep healthy people in healthy condition as well as provide root cause level management of disease. The department of AYUSH plays a vital role in keeping people healthy.
Some medicine creates adverse effect which occurs immediate or after many years. In addition to medical advantages, traditional knowledge of medicine survives in society and hold on communities because it provide safer and effective cures for ailments.
The Indian Systems of Medicine and Homoeopathy- ISM&H is established under Health and Family Welfare department since 1960. Different activities which carried out by the department are education in colleges, health-services at hospitals and dispensaries, manufacturing of medicines at pharmacies, cultivation, collection of medicinal plants at medicinal herbal gardens, training to technical persons at state training institute, researches & development through the different institutes of the state.
To provide qualified and competent technical person to the society, department is nourishing education services. At present there are 34 AYUSH teaching institutions in the state where the courses of Graduate and Post graduate teaching of different AYUSH specialties are conducted, which include 11 Ayurveda and 16 Homoeopathy Colleges, 01 naturopathy and yoga colleges.
There are 17150 registered practitioners of Indian Systems of Medicine (Ayurveda) and 12101 Homoeopathy in Gujarat. (Till March 2010).
There are 33 well equipped speciality Ayurveda hospitals with Panchakarma and Ksharsootra therapy for which Ayurveda branded worldwide. Entire 1865 bed capacity is made available for patients in different parts of Gujarat and 523 Ayurvedic dispensaries are serving the health care of rural people. 16 mobile dispensaries are on road to reach needful patients in remote villages of Gujarat, where no medical services are available. Lengthways 216 Homoeopathy dispensaries are taking care and cure of diseases through Homoeopathy.
